SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Coordinate the triage and referral of infants, children and adolescents into appropriate psychiatric, developmental disabilities or other services within a complex medical center and related services/agencies dedicated to the care of infants, adolescents and children.
The Psychiatric Intake Response Center (PIRC), located within Cincinnati Children's, is the admission and evaluation center for all psychiatric services.
PIRC is dedicated to providing high-quality evaluations and access to mental health services across the entire continuum of care. The service provides the community with reliable, professional triage and assessment by licensed independent behavioral health clinicians.
Services provided by the PIRC include:
Admission and evaluation center for children and adolescents in acute crisis at both Cincinnati Children's Burnet and Liberty Campus Emergency Department
Expert assessment and recommendation to help patients determine the next steps in treatment
Clinical telephone triage and response
Inquiries about inpatient care, outpatient care, community services
Mental health link to the community including outpatient referrals
Psychiatric consultation for patients admitted to the medical center
Insurance pre-certification and authorization of mental health services at Cincinnati Children's
Track data on number of referrals, referral types and monthly available visit types for purpose of managing supply and demand. Coordinate and maintain statistical data on number of calls and disposition and participates in Performance Improvement process for the department. Ability to gather clinical, medical, and demographic data to determine appropriate referral and level of care. Document information and refer patients to internal/external services as appropriate within timely manner.
Responds promptly to intake requests. Initiates referral process in a manner to be regularly and conveniently available to meet the needs of CHMC's patients as determined by department management and the medical staff.
Triage and evaluate referrals. Assess for appropriateness and/or determine options within or outside of CCHMC. Triage and evaluate the patient need vs. service availability of patients and families for outpatient referrals. Advocates for the needs of the child and adolescent patient and family within the hospital and the community.
Assess patient need to determine phone call urgency. If routine, assess needs and provide specific referral options. If urgent, transfer to appropriate clinician.
Develops skills and knowledge to interact with third-party payers and managed care. Maintain professional relationship with referral sources and managed care contacts. Authorize outpatient care and collect specific benefit information.
Bachelor's degree in a related field
2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
