This position serves as the Mental Health Social Work Section Manager for the Mental Health Service Line at the Orlando VA Healthcare System. The Mental Health Service Line is comprised of over 350 employees, including Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Mental Health Counselors, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Peer Support Specialists, and administrative staff. The Mental Health Service Line oversees the 40 bed Acute Mental Health Unit, the 116 bed Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Team, Substance Use Disorders Intensive Outpatient Program, PTSD outpatient care, Primary Care Mental Health Integration, Suicide Prevention, REACH Vet, Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery Services (RANGE and Mental Health Intensive Case Management), Medical and Neuropsychology, and the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Centers. The Mental Health Service Line spans Corporate Orlando, providing services at every location. The Supervisory Social Worker/Mental Health Social Work Section Manager has oversight over programs assigned to the community mental health section of the mental health service and responsibility for assigning work to their subordinate supervisors who will in turn be responsible for their supervisees within the aligned programs. These staff members are from a variety of disciplines, including Social Work and Nursing services. Duties include: Ensures completion of performance evaluations and/or proficiencies of staff and assists in training of staff aligned under him/her. Holds Social Work Section specific training/meetings with established frequency for all Social Workers within Mental Health. Assesses employee's development and training needs/competencies of employees, and whenever possible, assists subordinates in addressing these needs. Assists supervisors with recommendations of awards, advancement, and disciplinary actions. Resolves employee's complaints and refers grievances or unresolved complaints, using the proper procedures. Handles minor disciplinary measures, such as warning and reprimands, and recommends action in more serious cases. Practices fair and nondiscriminatory action for areas supervised in regards to: merit promotion of employees and recruitment and hiring of applicants; fair treatment of all employees; encouragement and recognition of employee achievements; career development of employees; and full utilization of their skills. May function as a field instructor supervising social work trainees. Makes managerial and clinical decisions for programs supervised, as well as for the Psychology and Psychiatry Program Managers, the Deputy Associate Chief of Staff, and the Associate Chief of Staff in their absence. These programs include Suicide Prevention, REACH Vet, Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery Services (RANGE and Mental Health Intensive Case Management), the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Centers and other Outpatient Mental Health programs as assigned. Provides consultation, supervision, negotiation with other departments and stakeholders and monitors those programs under area of responsibility. Promotes management goals and objectives from the Associate Chief of Staff-Mental Health, Facility Leadership, VISN Leadership, and National Leadership and translates them into coordinated work operations. Reviews outcomes and develops solutions with program coordinators/managers when programs are not performing according to prescribed standards; this includes a significant focus on SAIL measures that are impacted by the program staff. Expected to complete Lean Six Sigma courses through the Green Belt level to assist with the foundations of performance improvement within Mental Health Service Line. Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure program goals are met and that our Veterans are receiving exceptional care and serves on local, VISN, and National committees. Completes Action Items regarding Veteran concerns to the White House Hotline, Congress, and the Office of Inspector General. Oversees the Suicide Prevention Coordinator's collaboration with local Vet Centers. Collaborates and communicates with Chief Medical Officers of outlying clinics, as well as a variety of stakeholders within the hospital. Responsible for a portion of the Mental Health Service Line's proposed budget; obtains specific information on needs of aligned programs supervised to include necessary funds; equipment, furniture, and educational/travel needs; and ensures spending is appropriate for the programs supervised. Develops policy, procedure, and practice guidelines for programs supervised, as well as the larger Mental Health Service Line; ensures all subordinate staff are capable of developing policies and procedures for programs they supervise. Fulfills ethical responsibilities to Veterans, colleagues and VA in accordance with relevant discipline Code of Ethics, VHA Code of Ethics, and local Ethics policies. Provides a full range of comprehensive psychosocial services to Veterans and their families. Evaluates his/her practice on an on-going basis through participation in professional peer review, case conferences, research studies, or organized means.
